preschool is basically kindergarten 1 here
also middle school for us isnt like high school in the sense that we consider it completely separate from what came before it, its mostly just a term BUT usually middle school is a separate school from the grades before (school as in building)
nobody says "oh im in year 1 of middle school", that would be ridiculous. we just say 6th grade, 7th, etc
i didnt but im vaguely familiar with a lot of school systems, but brazil wasnt one of them and what you described wasnt either
