not sure how id explain it but i think underground rap has taken a shift in 2 directions when it comes to rapping and producing, producers are the ones now who are incredibly technically skilled theyre all guys who have been playing with DAWs since the age of 12 theyre the ones who are making the unbelievable crazy part of the song while the rapper is the one creating the vibe and feeling, its more a thing of controlling the mood and saying words that just sound correct and thats what builds the feelings of the song in question. very dificult thing to explain you kind of just have to be around it to understand it

imma have to hard disagree with you on that take about the 90s stuff, guys like freddie gibbs and boldy james and esp the griselda guys are easily on par if not better than what came out of those days. i dont think it sounds like imitation at all, more like it carries the spirit of that style but is very distinct in its own time
but yes i do appreciate how the kids are playing around with commercial rap, it fucks with my boomer brain but some of it is just way too much fun to ignore/deny
