From what I understand, their falling out was pretty dramatic. After years of incredible collaboration, they had a major personal and professional disagreement during the making of "Red Beard" in 1965. Mifune felt the film's long production (2 years) basically wrecked his career momentum, and Kurosawa was known for being an extremely demanding director. Their relationship never fully recovered after that, which was a huge loss for Japanese cinema. They went from being legendary creative partners to basically not speaking for decades. Pretty sad for two titans of film.
