yeah that's right, and depending on your motherboard, some newer ones can be reseted to factory and it still would work, not sure about yours though

just the motherboard right?
i can still salvage the gpu/cpu/ssd/ram right?

if there are electrical issues in your area while updating or you unplug it while updating, the PC will completely die

that's it, there's no other risk

so what's the worst thing that can happen with updating bios, my machine will never turn on again?
#365023  [easychan] /kr/  thread 136452  23 Nov 2025, 04:46  view thread  view source ↗
oh, check the zip, comes with a PDF with instructions, I think it's way easier to do it in that machine

search for your motherboard and "downloads" or something like that, download the 1-2 MB file that will update the bios, flash it into a flashdrive (can also put it in your C drive but that's a bit more complicated), and load up the bios (there are many ways, depends on your machine, could be F2 at start up)

for 2 years definitely there was some security patch in there so you really need to do it, sometimes the updates are not that important or something not for your case, but for that long there's probably something good for you

so if the bios says its 2 years old
what does that mean for my 14700F
that it wasn't fixed?

I really hate "revisions" on motherboards, my motherboard doesn't specify what version it is except in the mobo itself in a tiny corner

i updated my bios recently and i almost fucked myself by thinking I could use a 64GB usb. apparently I specifically need to use FAT so i had to use a 16gb stick

nvmes are a cake to install, if your mobo has the m2 slot for it
you basically plug it like a pendrive and secure it in place with a little screw

worrying about drive physical size feels silly now that we have nvme2s
i also wish i had gotten a full atx board but i could only afford an mATX
this left me with only two fan plugs that i have to share

I definitely wish I had gone with a regular ATX board and case to make upgrading a little easier but I hadn't considered that years ago. I could barely fit my new 3.5" HDD
